ADA Evidence Analysis
NFSC 370L: Clinical Nutrition Lab
Skill Area: Evaluating an original research article
Assignment title: ADA Evidence Analysis
What I learned: I learned to read, interpret, use the ADA Evidence Analysis pyramid, critically evaluate and rate the strength of an original research article. Learning about the different design types of studies like prospective, retrospective, case control etc. can be a strong determinant of the strength of the study and if further studies are needed to confirm the results.
Reflection to assignment: For this assignment, I had to break down the study into its individual components and then form a conclusion based on the overall study. By using the ADA Evidence Analysis website and knowing about the strengths and weaknesses of a retrospective study, I was able to form my own opinions about how strong the conclusion was and recommend further studies to be conducted.
Relevance to the profession: It is very important for dietetics professionals to be able to objectively evaluate a study and recognize its strengths and weaknesses depending on its design type. Although a conclusion formed within the article may sound strong, upon further investigation, it may end up being fairly weak and may need a more controlled study to confirm the results.
