Critique of Counseling Session

NFSC 460: Nutrition Counseling and Education

Skill Area: Critiquing my counseling skills

Assignment title: Critique of counseling skills

What I learned: I learned that individual counseling sessions are a lot harder than they appear to be.  As a dietitian, one must be able to obtain relevant information through completing an assessment, engage in active listening and practice motivational interviewing in order to get the client to come up with attainable and practical goals for themselves.

Reflection to assignment: This assignment provided real-world counseling experience with someone who was trying to lose weight.  My client came up with realistic goals for herself while I gently guided her and made suggestions regarding slight changes she could make with her diet and physical activity in order for her to reach her goal.

Relevance to the profession: One-on-one counseling is almost inevitable in the field of dietetics.  Dietitians can work in any number of settings such as in-patient, out-patient and private practice where counseling skills are imperative to possess.  Being able to critically evaluate counseling skills allows one to become a better dietitian in the future by improving upon those areas that need the most work.
