Skill Area: Written communication skills
Assignment title: Decrease Heart Disease with Vitamin D
What I learned: This assignment was written for publication in a nutrition journal, one that would be understood by an audience with some advanced knowledge of human nutrition.
Reflection to assignment: This assignment challenged me to locate numerous original study articles and extract specific information concerning my chosen topic. The language I used in this article was selected in such a way as to explain complex biochemical pathways in the context of the studies that were conducted within the cited articles. By combining the research from the different articles, I was able to make connections between the relevant pathways and their association with a disease state which may ultimately lead to further study.
Relevance to the profession: Being able to consolidate multiple original articles, summarize them and form a conclusion is a very important skill for dietetics professional to possess. In addition to being able to interpret and make an accurate conclusion via the data presented, it is also extremely important to have effective written communication skills. All nutrition professionals must be able to effectively communicate through writing as dietitians may be involved in writing letters to legislators, grant writing, medical charting, conducting their own research, writing their own original research articles or reviewing other research that has been done. The skill of writing effectively and in a concise manner is one that every professional needs to be able to do well.
